Knowing how to manage the lifecycle of IT products is not common knowledge. Large businesses, even if they have internal IT employees on staff, do not always have sufficient training or experience in IT infrastructure management. That’s where we come into the picture. As independent and unbiased IT consultants, we worked with Apex Utilities Inc. in 2022 and 2023 to help with several IT projects.
The Client
Apex Utilities Inc. (formerly Alta Gas) is a provincially regulated natural gas distribution utility delivering safe, reliable, clean, and affordable natural gas service to over 82,000 residential, rural, commercial, and industrial customers in more than 90 communities across Alberta. Apex operates over 21,000 km of natural gas pipelines and over 600 pressure and regulations stations through a network of 16 district offices.
The Problem & Goal
The client was facing a critical problem: their main network firewall (an expensive, six-figure device) was reaching the end of its life, and the newer versions of the same brand were no longer considered the best in the industry. The client attempted to make a choice internally on which brand to invest in. Their team could not agree on the best product. They needed independent, external experts who could offer independent, objective advice on which product to choose as a replacement.
The Scope
Evaluate several leading firewall providers and give an unbiased review to help the company choose the best solution for their needs and goals. This project took place in 2022.
The Solution
We facilitated several multi-hour interview sessions with the four firewall vendors in scope. After thorough analysis of features, benefits, shortcomings, and alignment to the client’s requirements, we delivered an in-depth evaluation of Next-Generation Firewall solutions from Cisco Systems, Palo Alto Networks, Checkpoint, and Fortinet. Our review enabled the client to make a well-informed decision to replace their existing network firewall.
